Almost everyone experiences some unwanted hair growth. For teens, unwanted hair is an embarrassing flaw. In adulthood, care in grooming is important for social and business reasons. In our older years, unwanted hair can appear in the most unexpected places. Removing unwanted hair is a high priority for most people.

Shaving is a constant hassle, while chemical hair removers can cause skin damage and produce only temporary results. Electrolysis for permanent hair removal is expensive and time consuming. Waxing treatments are painful and the hair soon grows back. Laser hair removal works well, but the process is slow, due to the small surfaces covered by the laser. Palomar Pulsed Light Systems use light, like lasers, but cover a much larger area, allowing faster coverage of the skin and lower cost.

Laser Hair Removal vs. Palomar Pulsed Light Hair Removal

The Palomar Pulsed Light System emits pulses of strong light, tuned to exactly the wavelength needed to heat the pigment in hair follicles, loosening the hair and disabling the hair follicle. It’s similar to laser hair removal, but its much larger treatment window covers more area on the skin and eliminates the slow, tedious process of laser treatments. You get faster treatments and the shorter time needed lowers the cost for each treatment.

Hair can be removed using Palomar Pulsed Light Systems from any part of the body, except around the eyes. The upper lip, chin, face, neck, underarms, bikini line, legs, chest and back can all be treated. Since the treatment only works on active hair follicles, it can only be effective on a portion of the hair follicles in an area. Since not all follicles are active at once, successive treatments, at intervals, will disable all hair follicles for a permanent solution to unwanted hair.

What to Expect from Laser Hair Removal Treatments

Your Skin Care Specialist will move the Palomar handpiece over your skin. The light pulses send a beam of light into your skin. The light, tuned to the correct wavelength, creates heat in the hair follicle, disabling it and loosening the hair. You’ll hear a tone for each pulse and may feel a mild snapping sensation on your skin. A cooling system in the handpiece removes all excess heat. Depending on the size of the area, treatments may last from 10-30 minutes.

After the treatment, you will feel a mild sensation like a sunburn, which will pass within 24 hours. If it’s troublesome for you, icepacks can ease the discomfort. Hair will be expelled from the follicles over the next 7-30 days. As other follicles become active, new hair will grow from them. Additional treatments will disable those follicles. In most cases four or five treatments at intervals will remove all hair from the treated area.
